Russian Dairy Sector Study Tour to Italy, May 2010
A group of representatives from the Russian dairy industry visited Italy to see how Geographical Indications (GIs) are used by Italian dairy producers to boost sales of traditional products. Italy is the country in Europe with the largest number of GIs, which can be an interesting alternative to private brands. The tour, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), took place on 23-27 May 2010. The case study selected to illustrate how Geographical Indications work was the Parmigiano-reggiano, one of Italy's most famous cheeses and one of the country's Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) with the strongest economic weight.
