Grain/Wheat/Flour

Wheat is grown in most parts of the world. It is unique among cereals since the total area under wheat cultivation world-wide is larger than for any other cereal and the amount of wheat traded internationally exceeds that of all other grains. By 2012, the global bakery and cereals market is forecasted at approximately USD365 billion, with growth being pushed by fast emerging markets like China and India. Markets in developed countries are highly mature and experience low growth; therefore, bakery and cereals manufacturers respond by attempting to differentiate their brands, especially in growth segments such as health-conscious and convenience items.

In Central and Eastern Europe, the wheat areas with the most potential are in Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Poland has the largest wheat production but is closer to achieving maximum potential yields, which translates into fewer possibilities in terms of improvements. In the CIS, the wheat areas with the most potential are in Ukraine, Russia, and Kazakhstan. These three countries are steadily becoming bigger global players in the industry. However, poor port and transport infrastructure are limiting factors for exports from the region.
